Employment Opportunity at The Savvy Sleeper

The Savvy Sleeper is a retail store in Ivy, VA, 4 miles west of Charlottesville. We sell Tempurpedic and Savvy Rest organic mattresses in our local area, and we do some business on the web. If you live in Charlottesville, you have probably seen our ads. We have been in business for 5 years.

We also own the organic mattress business www.savvyrest.com. It is a national business with wholesale distributors around the country.

Skills Required:

  • Good communication: to me this means seeing what is and being totally honest about it, even if you don’t like it. Our success is based on cultivating great relationships and building trust. Read: sensitivity.

  • Detail Oriented: you will be taking orders, writing orders, and communicating with all kinds of people. What you say and write will be used to fill orders, process returns, and generally handle many details of the business. You have to be accurate. You need to be able to work independently, handle details, and be good with paperwork.

  • Personable: Your voice, appearance, and general demeanor both in person and on the phone need to resonate with our mission: each customer needs to feel safe, connected, and welcomed.

  • You do need to be facile with email and computer work. It’s a lot of how we communicate with customers and wholesalers.

  • People on the phone and in person need to feel relaxed and comfortable in your presence. Sleep is a deep, personal, intimate experience, and selling a quality sleep product requires the ability to allow people to feel safe enough to share their sleep difficulties and/or health problems.

Some business experience is required.
Teaching experience and writing skills are more of a plus than sales experience.
Knowledge about health and well being and body awareness are a plus.
Knowledge about sleep is a big plus.

Responsibilities

  • Sales: we specifically called the position customer service because we don’t want or need aggressive salespeople. If you learn about us and the products, the products sell themselves. You will spend a lot of time on the phone.

  • Other responsibilities will be widely varied and enjoyable as long as you can flow with what is going on. Some of those responsibilities are:

Pricing pillows in our storage room
Doing errands
Possibly working one day per week in our warehouse
Assisting the store manager Dominick Palamenti

Detailed project work

Store and showroom upkeep

Benefits:

Expect first year earnings to be $30,000 - $32,000. By the time you start, we will offer group health insurance.

  • We expect that you will have Thursday and Sunday off on a regular basis to start with. It is somewhat flexible, but Saturdays are mostly required.

One week vacation after 6 months. Three weeks vacation after the first year.

Exceptional training.

If business is good, you will receive a bonus at the end of the year.
